The IOC earlier on Friday awarded Beijing, China the host city for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The city, which is the only one to ever be awarded both versions of the major event, will use many of it’s venues and facilities from the 2008 event and this was a major factor in the decision.  The event will be held February 4th to February 20th centered around it’s key venue, the Beijing National Stadium.

Beijing is certainly not a city with “winter-esque” conditions, the utilization of snow manufacturing technologies and water had IOC officials convinced.  The mean temperature in February for Beijing is -1 degree Celsius.  Vancouver, which hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, had an average mean temperature of 4.9 degrees Celcius and hosted a largely successful event.  The warmer climates can be a concern for athletes and making conditions ideal for winter sports, but can and are also seen as an advantage to allow for a more comfortable environment for tourists not only to enjoy the sports, but the cities themselves as travel destinations.

While Beijing itself may not be a prime Winter city, China has made some great strides in becoming a Winter sports destination.  They have also earned between 9-11 medals over the previous 3 winter Olympics, and will look to strengthen their position when it hosts in 2022.  Athletes from various parts of China that are more accustomed to Winter conditions, will surely be extremely motivated and delighted to be able to be given the chance to compete at the world level in their own country.

Beijing outlasted Almaty, Kazakhstan in the bidding process, and will be the 3rd consecutive country in Asia to host the Olympics, preceded by the Winter Olympics of 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea and the Summer Olympics of 2020 in Tokyo, Japan.
